One of the topics that are yet to be explored in the area of Micah studies is the use of metaphors for God and Israel. The description of God as יהוה אור לי (YHWH will be/is light to me) by the lamenting speaker in Mic 7:8-10 is one of these metaphors. This investigation explores how this metaphor for God as “light” is related to another yet implicit metaphor for the deity in this pericope, namely YHWH IS SUZERAIN. Following Conceptual Metaphor Theory, I will unfold the relation between these metaphors by first showing various ancient Near Eastern materials using solar languages for the deity and suzerain-vassal treaties as possible source domains of the metaphor.
